The Yonkers Public Library‘s Riverfront Art Gallery is set to kick off a pre-celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with the unveiling of a captivating new exhibition, “Across Imaginary Boundaries.”
The Caribbean region, with its rich tapestry of cultures and histories, both grew and suffered through colonization and oppression. “Across Imaginary Boundaries” challenges visitors to contemplate the complexities of identity and place within this cultural backdrop, all through the lens of contemporary art. The exhibition aims to celebrate new ways of thinking about shifting identities and the concept of home in a rapidly changing world.
“Across Imaginary Boundaries” will feature the works of 18 talented artists, including Enid B. Alvarez, Albert Areizaga, Shirley Azcona, Nola Brooks, and many others. Through various mediums such as photography, printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and video, these artists will weave a tapestry of narratives inspired by their Caribbean diasporic backgrounds. Their art explores themes of adaptation, ancestral knowledge, and the representation of diverse experiences within the Caribbean’s complex historical context.
Curated by Haifa Bint-Kadi, this exhibition promises to be a dynamic exploration of art rooted in diasporic identity across the Caribbean.
