Spider’s Web Comic Shop Closes Again After Initial Rescue By Loyal Fans

The popular comic book shop, The Spider’s Web, had been a staple in the comic Yonkers community since 2013. Located on Yonkers Avenue, it helped establish a real sense of community amongst staff and loyal patrons. But after a second chance, it seems to have shuttered for good.

On January 3rd 2023, original owner Paul Borrero announced the store’s closure via a Facebook Post and then closed its doors that very same week. After 10 years in business, he was looking to explore other endeavors. Long time customers and friends, Thomas Ramirez and Rich Kean, did not want to see their beloved shop disappear. So, they took it upon themselves to re-open its doors while keeping a long time staff member, Andrew. The comic connoisseur was key in assisting the business, and had helped keep it running smoothly.

They announced a sequel of sorts to The Spider’s Web and reopened two months later in March. The staff continued their true love of comics and were able to recommend nearly anything based off of your own personal interests. The shop was well stocked with independent titles, many you may not have heard of, as well as popular series from the Marvel and DC universes.

The Spider’s Web Has Woven Its Final Chapter

While they gave customers the nostalgic, 80s-90s vibe in terms of design and retro atmosphere, it unfortunately seems that this beloved comic book shop is now also history. An X/Twitter user named, Johnny Alicea, posted on January 13 that he had drove by the Yonkers Ave. location to find an obviously closed business.

We have not be able to contact the two co-owners who rescued the shop last year to ask why they were unsuccessful in keeping it open. However, founder Borrero explained his decision to initially close in January 2023 during a News12 interview.

We are really not a necessity. We are not groceries, we are not clothing, so we are at the bottom. We are just entertainment.

Perhaps that sentiment persisted and forever doomed this icon of niche culture. Whatever the reason, we wish everyone involved in The Spider’s Web a fond and final farewell.
