A Yonkers man was charged with second-degree murder after he fatally stabbed his father at the family’s home Monday morning and fled before being arrested, police said.
Rami Ahmad, 31, was taken into custody without incident on the morning of Sept. 28 near Kingston Avenue and Palmer Road, several hours after police responded to a report of a stabbing at 102 Smart Ave., according to the Yonkers Police Department.
Officers found Hekmat Ahmad, 61, suffering from apparent stab wounds. Police and medical personnel provided aid, including CPR, before he was taken to Westchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Investigators determined that Rami Ahmad, the victim’s son, was inside the residence when the stabbing occurred and left before officers arrived, police said.
Police launched an extensive search involving patrol officers, the Emergency Service Unit, detectives and neighboring law enforcement agencies. Investigators used surveillance cameras and other investigative information to determine that Ahmad was traveling north along the South County Trail, according to police.
Detectives later located Ahmad near Kingston Avenue and Palmer Road, close to the trail. A folding knife was recovered from him, police said.
The case is being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office. As of Wednesday, information about Ahmad’s arraignment was not immediately available.
The charge is an accusation, and Ahmad is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
