Tyrese Shubrick, a 24-year-old resident of Yonkers, has been sentenced to 21 years in state prison for the killing of Ruben Martinez Campos, a 47-year-old Yonkers resident and proprietor of a local clothing store.
The fatal incident occurred on April 20th, 2021, around 5:40 p.m. Shubrick brandished a knife in Martinez Campos’s store on Main Street in Yonkers. A dispute ensued, resulting in Shubrick absconding with a hat. Confronted by the owner outside the store, Shubrick stabbed Martinez Campos twice in the chest. The victim’s wife and nearby surveillance cameras witnessed the event. Emergency services transported Ruben Martinez Campos to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he succumbed to his injuries.
During an appearance in Elmsford Village Court on different case the next day, Yonkers Police identified and apprehended Shubrick. The weapon used in the crime was never recovered.
Tyrese Shubrick entered a guilty plea on April 19th, admitting to Manslaughter in the First Degree of Ruben Martinez-Campos.
Judge James McCarty of the Westchester County Court presided over this case. Bureau Chief Jonathan Strongin and Senior Assistant District Attorney Adrian Murphy from the Trials and Investigations Division prosecuted the case with assistance from Craig Ascher, Chief of the New Rochelle Branch.
Shubrick was sentenced to a 21-year internment in state prison. Besides the prison term, he will also be subject to five years of post-release supervision. Additionally, Shubrick also received a two-year prison term to be served concurrently with his 21-year sentence for an unrelated stabbing incident.
Today, we have ensured a violent individual, who ruthlessly took the life of a man trying to protect his business and livelihood, is off our streets. Our thoughts are with Mr. Campos’s family and the Yonkers community.
Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah
Addressing the court, Mrs. Martinez Campos expressed her anguish, stating, “You senselessly took my love’s life without any reason in front of me…This has been a nightmare from which I have not been able to wake up from…He didn’t deserve what you did to him.”
