Porch Pirate Captured by Yonkers Police with Aid of Security Camera and DPW Worker

announced on Monday, January 8th, the arrest of an attempted thief who had tried yet miserably failed to escape with stolen packages from a local front porch on January 3rd.

Francisco Jose Eder Mateo, 27, of was seen swiping packages from a resident’s front porch through their ring camera. Even though he was wearing a camouflage jacket, he was certainly easy to spot.

I just saw somebody on my ring camera steal two packages,” as stated by the citizen on the 911 call.

The apprehension was swiftly joined by the combined efforts of Yonkers Police, the private citizen who made the 911 call, and a DPW worker who prevented the criminal from getting away.

The fast-paced police bodycam footage shows the officer attempting to stop the thief for questioning. However, Mateo dismissed the officer and quickly took off running. A Yonkers Public Works employee stepped in and was able to knock him down. This allowed the officer to catch up and make the arrest. “This video shows what happens when everyone works together seamlessly to stop crime.” the department wrote on social media.

Thieves Should Try Elsewhere

Authorities charged Mateo with felony crimes and misdemeanors. These include grand larceny in the 4th degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree, among other others.

With no notable priors found, the court released Eder Mateo on his own recognizance at his arraignment hearing. As one Facebook commenter put it, “Great work, unfortunately freed. But he may think twice about entering Yonkers again to steal.”
