In a shocking incident that has raised concerns about school safety, a high school student in Yonkers has been suspended and arrested for allegedly attacking a teacher in the classroom. The incident, which occurred at Gorton High School, has shed light on a growing problem of violence in schools.
According to Yonkers Police Public Information Officer Dean Politopoulos, the 16-year-old student, whose identity remains undisclosed due to her age, reportedly struck the 50-year-old teacher on Monday. Disturbing video footage of the incident spread across social media. It depicted the student repeatedly striking the teacher while she laid on the floor behind her desk. The severity of the teacher’s injuries has not been confirmed.
A growing national problem
This alarming incident comes in the wake of a 2022 report from the American Psychological Association (APA) that revealed the extent of violence and harassment faced by teachers nationwide. The report found that one-third of teachers reported being threatened or experiencing verbal harassment from students. Shockingly, 14% of teachers admitted to suffering physical violence at the hands of students. This report warns of a potential shortage of teachers if the issue of classroom violence is not addressed. Nearly half of all teachers surveyed expressed their intention to change careers due to a lack of school safety.
The Yonkers School District announced that they will not tolerate any physical attacks on staff members or students. Consequently, the student faces expulsion following a superintendent’s hearing.
