Monday’s solar eclipse was a rare astronomical event that was visible by millions across the United States. It was widely anticipated not only for its remarkable period of darkness, but for its rarity. No total solar eclipse would be visible with this level of totality across the United States again until 2044.
A “Sun-sational” Experience
High school students from the Yonkers Partners in Education Program (YPIE) gathered at the riverfront to watch the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. YPIE partnered with Feeding Westchester to host a watch party for the teenagers who enrolled in this program.
Feeding Westchester provided snacks eclipse-themed snacks including Sun Chips, apples, oranges, and a Capri Sun. Each student was also provided with eclipse viewing glasses also courtesy of Feeding Westchester which continually supports the YPIE school pantry program.
Over 1,200 high school students from public high schools across Yonkers participate in the YPIE. Their goal is to prepare students for future college success.
By the time the next solar eclipse occurs in 2044, these teenagers will be college graduates in their 30’s.
