The familair 1930s city office building at 87 Nepperhan Ave. went under the wrecking ball Monday. The onetime home of the city health center, more recently host to the Parking Violations Bureau payment windows and the Building Dept., will be replaced by a new city park. Demolition is expected to take place through next week, with another month or more for hauling debris, with site restoration expected to be complete by early November. The city put the cost of the demolition at $4.9 million. Bidding on the park project is set to start in late fall, with contruction slated for early spring, 2027.
At the demolition kick off event, Mayor Spano seemed to be channeling his inner Bob the Builder, as he posed for photographers in one of the wrecking cranes. He issued a video today declaring that an ancient wrong was finally being made right — the 87 Nepperhan buidling, he said, had for too long blocked the view of City Hall. He pointed out that City Hall is equally beautiful from the front and from the back.
The pace of change in Yonkers is such that barely 24 hours after the old structure bit the dust, city officials gathered less than a mile away to celebrate the silver-shoveled ground breeaking of Titan Real Estate’s $185 million Park Square Yonkers development on Loehr Place.
