This year, there are two contested Democratic Party primary elections in Yonkers for the Westchester Board of Legislators and one contested race for the New York Assembly:
· Leslye Oquendo–Thomas v Wilson Terrero for County of Westchester Legislator (17th District)
· Anthony Nicodemo v. Kisha Skipper for Westchester County Legislator (15th District)
· Jeanette Garcia v. Frank Jereis for New York State Assembly (90 District)
The primary is scheduled for June 23rd, with early voting beginning on June 13th.
The Yonkers Ledger is covering these races as there is very little independent coverage to be found elsewhere. We hope to give Yonkers voters insights into who these candidates are and analysis of the issues at the center of their campaigns.
In addition, because there are no races for city council or the mayor this year, these races are important, because they may serve as a barometer as to what type of leadership Yonkers Democrats voters are looking for in their elected officials, and may very well predict whether Yonkers voters will have an appetite for change in the mayoral and council elections scheduled for 2027.
We begin our coverage with the race between Oquendo-Thomas and Thomas for county legislator. Our reporter Phil Zisman interviewed both candidates, and you can click on the links below to read his stories about them.
