In a dramatic early morning rescue, Yonkers police officers heroically prevented a potential tragedy as they saved a distressed man from jumping off an overpass onto Interstate 87.
The ordeal ocurred on Thursday, October 19, around 3:30 a.m.. Initially, Yonkers Police received a report of a man threatening to jump from the overpass above the southbound lanes of Interstate 87. This overpass is near 521 Central Park Avenue. Officers swiftly responded to the scene, where they encountered the distraught man precariously leaning against the overpass guardrail.
Officers Michael Heath and Sandro Vazquez exhibited exemplary professionalism and empathy as they initiated a dialogue with the troubled individual. Their primary objective was to persuade him to step away from the edge and discuss his problems with the authorities. For nearly 20 worrysome minutes, the officers patiently conversed with the man, trying to offer him reassurance and support.
Tragically, despite their best efforts, the man suddenly turned away from the officers and leaped over the guardrail. It was a heart-stopping moment for all, but what happened next was nothing short of a miracle.
Several Yonkers officers acted swiftly and managed to grab the man just before he plummeted to the roadway below. They pulled him back over the guardrail to safety. Emergency services subsequently transported the man to a local hospital for a thorough evaluation. This prompt and coordinated response undoubtedly saved the man’s life.
A video of the heart-pounding incident was later released by the Yonkers Police Department on various social media platforms. There, it garnered widespread attention and appreciation for the officers’ bravery and dedication.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano commended the officers involved in the successful rescue, emphasizing their essential role in preventing both harm to the distressed individual and potential danger to passing motorists. “Good, compassionate work by our Yonkers Police saved this individual and motorists from potential injury or worse,” Mayor Spano stated. He further highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and support.
