A Yonkers public school‘s robotics team is headed to the national championship in Houston after an amazing performance at the New York City regional competition last weekend.
This robotics team from Yonkers Middle High School is called, “The Mechadogs.” Founded in 2014, this team has grown to over a dozen student members. It competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition, which is a national non-profit science and technology program. This STEM-based program challenges students to work as a team to build industrial-sized robots. These robots then face-off against each other in organized competitions. To-date, the Mechadogs have competed in 14 such competitions and won 12 awards.
The Mechadogs recently participated in the The New York & Hudson Valley Regional competition. Starting on Wednesday, April 5th and continuing through Saturday the 8th, the team competed against 50 others at The Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. The teams hailed from schools all over the New York Metro area. The Mechadogs won the regional title, securing their place in the upcoming national championship.
This year, Houston, Texas is host to the national championship for the FIRST robotics program. The event runs from April 19th to the 22nd and promises the student competitors that it will be “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.” We wish the best of luck to The Mechadogs and praise them for their achievements.
