The Yonkers Police Department today arrested the son of the deceased man discovered in his home on Tuesday on suspicion of his murder.
On August 29th, police swiftly responded to a distress call at 347 Scarsdale Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of 76-year-old Jose Raul Velasco, bearing the brutal marks of multiple severe lacerations. The crime scene, a quiet suburban home now marked by police tape, was meticulously combed over by detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit.
The investigation led to the swift arrest of the victim’s own son, August Velasco, 47. He is now the prime suspect in this crime. Their inquiry further uncovered the details of the incident, pointing to an alleged attack by August Velasco on his father. A cleaver is the suspected murder weapon. The fatal blows struck the elderly man numerous times, ending his life within the confines of his own home.
Yonkers Police Department Commissioner Christopher Sapienza expressed his condolences, saying, “It is a sad and tragic incident when an individual takes the life of another, a sentiment which is only amplified when there is a family relation connecting them.” Commending the diligence of the officers and detectives involved, Sapienza lauded their quick response and thorough investigation.
August Velasco now faces a charge of Murder 2nd and awaits arraignment in Yonkers Criminal Court.
