Wilbur Aldridge, who led the NAACP Mid-Hudson/Westchester region for almost 30 years, died Aug. 9.
In a statement, the NAACP mourned Aldridge as “a dedicated leader in the fight for civil rights, justice, and equality.”
In an interview with the Ledger, Kisha D. Skipper, president of NAACP Yonkers, reflected on Aldridge’s stern yet dedicated leadership within the organization, underscoring his commitment to racial equity and diversity. She added that Aldridge was a strong advocate and activist, unafraid to call out racial bias and discrimination.
“Sometimes you have to be the bigger person. Sometimes you have to extend the olive branch for the sake of the relationship, for the sake of community,” Skipper recalled as an example of his sage advice.
NAACP Yonkers will participate in a Black August event honoring Aldridge’s life and legacy on Fri., Aug. 28. His services, including visitation and funeral, will be held on Friday, Aug. 21, and Saturday, Aug. 22, at Calvary Baptist Church, 15 Clinton Street, Haverstraw.
