First Day of Hanukkah Sees Yonkers Celebrate

Today, December 18, marked the first day of the Jewish festival of lights called Hanukkah. Many in the city came together to commemorate this occasion including some elected officials. The Chabad of Yonkers celebrated this event at the Fountain Plaza in Ridge Hill at sundown (4pm).

Mayor Mike Spano sent out a special newsletter for the start of the holiday proclaiming, “It reminds us all of the power of the human spirit and our ability to overcome the greatest of obstacles.” The mayor also participated in a menorah lighting.

Yonkers sixth district city council member Anthony Merante and New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins were present at the Ridge Hill ceremony.

The holiday of Hanukkah runs from Sunday, December 18th through Monday December 26th.
