State Senator representing parts of Yonkers got coal in her stocking this year from Kathy Hochul. On December 23rd, the governor vetoed four bills put forth by Shelley Mayer of district 37. The senator took to Twitter to explain these bills, and her displeasure at the actions of the governor.

The bills, by Mayer’s description, are common-sense measures for everyday problems of her constituents. One required the Department of Labor to notify applicants of the status of their unemployment insurance claims. Another bill, S.9432 was the implementation of new requirements for the MTA related to preserving the environment, a cause that is adjacent to the Green Jobs Bond Act that was passed in November which Mayer strongly supported.
“I’m not going to stop doing what I was elected to do, to fight for my constituents and all New Yorkers”
These vetoes, while disappointing for Mayer, can’t come as a complete surprise considering Hochul’s actions following her rocky election. Hochul has vetoed 39 bills since then and her recent nomination of conservative Hector LaSalle to Chief Judge of the NY State Court of Appeals is also raising the ire of senators. With these moves, progressive activists and electeds alike are unsure of Hochul’s endgame. For them, it may seem, that Governor Hochul does not believe that politics is the art of making friends.
