First Target Store in Yonkers to Open in Cross County Shopping Center

Shoppers in have a reason to rejoice as the grand opening for the city’s first Target store has come. Target, the Minneapolis-based department store chain, will open its doors at the Cross County Shopping Center on Sunday October 22nd, 2023.

The arrival of Target to Yonkers has been eagerly awaited, with the national retailer signing a 40-year lease to occupy the 132,000-square-foot space formerly home to Sears. This move is a significant development for the city, bringing a beloved retail giant to Yonkers for the first time.

The new Yonkers Target aims to provide residents with an “easy, affordable, and convenient shopping experience.” Residents can expect a broad selection of products across various categories. The retailer is known for its wide range of items from clothing and electronics to home goods and groceries. And this brand new Yonkers store also features a Starbucks, CVS pharmacy, and same-day delivery services.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano expressed his excitement about the arrival of Target. He stated that the city’s planning and development teams worked closely with Marx Realty to create a “town square” concept within the open-air design of the Cross County Shopping Center. Retail theft

Despite the positive , Target recently announced the closure of nine stores across four states. This includes one in nearby East Harlem, citing concerns about theft affecting the safety of both customers and employees. The closures commence on October 21. But, Target says it remains committed to serving the communities with a combined 150 open stores in those markets.

The retail giant has since invested in various strategies to combat theft. Investments such as increasing security personnel, utilizing third-party guard services, and implementing theft deterrent tools. Despite these efforts, Target has faced losses estimated to reach $1.2 billion this fiscal year due to theft.
